Over the years, we have found that many insurance agents tend to be order takers letting the client dictate coverage and limits without educating on them of the various coverge and why you go with ceratin limits.
When dealing with Liability and Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) you will hear a set of three numbers.
- First number shows the maximum amount the company will pay for bodily injury for any one person.
- Second number is the maximum the company will pay bodily injury for the entire accident.
- Thrid number is for property.
Most people want minimum limits for several reasons such as cost or what do I have to lose.
The fact is in many cases the cost is not much different. The real reason you carry these limits is because your UM/UIM limits can not be higher than your Liability limits. Keep in mind you are your most valuable asset and as you seen most people are not looking to take care of you.
As you will see we only listed two numbers here and a ? for the third number. The reason for this is because the first 2 numbers are for bodily injury and the 3rd number is for property.
Set the 3rd number up to cover the most valuable vehicle you own.
We consider this one of the most important coverages as it covers you and your passengers if the other person has no insurance or inadequate limits.
This coverage offers broader coverage than Medical as it will also pay for Household Services or even a percentage of your Loss Income. Usually about 60%. This is important if you don't have a job that will pay you if your are not working.
Please keep in mind this extends to your passengers as well so if you have a family member that works hourly and is injured in your vehicle there may be some assistance to them.
Make sure you set this limit on the high enough to cover the cost of a rental vehicle like your vehicle or you may find yourself paying for the difference.
This is usually a reimbursement expense. If this is a problem you may be able to get the claims adjuster to help you.
We recommend you set this limit at the highest available to you. The reason is due to the cost of towing. This coverage will pay for things such as locksmith service to minor repairs done at the site of breakdown.
This coverage is inexpensive and will pay for itself if you ever have to use it.
This is the amount your are responsible for in a claim. Set this limit to the amount your can afford. While you may save some money by having larger deductibles. It does not good if you can not afford to pay your deductible.
Have your agent run numbers for you with different deductibles so you can see the cost difference. Sometime, it's not worth taking the higher deductible for the small savings in premium.
Over 15 years of evaluating policies I have come to understand most agents don't offer or even quote this coverage for their clients...
The truth is most people don't deal with Life insurance. The question is: If you were to lose your loved one in an accident would you need help with final expense such as funeral cost? This coverage is so inexpensive and it can be such a blessing should the need come to pass.
People afford what they want to afford and when they see a value then it easier to justify paying for it.
We hope this give you a different perspective on your auto insurance policy.
We understand not everyone has the same values which is one of the reasons we are not open to the general public.
Our ideal client is someone who values coverage at a competitive price.
